“In 2020, the public sector spent 2.2 billion euros on IT, about a third of which was from the federal government. This sum is expected to grow to three billion euros by 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 36 percent,” said Michael Zettel, Vice President of the internet offensive Austria, yesterday, Monday, at a press conference in Vienna.
The industry estimates the need for investment by 2024 at four billion euros. The telecom providers want to use the 1.4 billion euros that the government is investing in broadband expansion this year and in 2023 in other ways. The money should also be given to citizens in the form of vouchers, so that they can buy more powerful and more expensive Internet connections. In addition, the Internet offensive demands a “gigabit fee” from streaming services, which occupied most of the network capacities but paid nothing for the infrastructure.
