A scale printed on the pack should make it easier for customers to see which yoghurt they should not eat too much of for a balanced diet. Is labeling progressing?
The Nutri-Score logo is increasingly appearing on food packages in supermarkets to help people buy healthier products.
In the meantime, 300 German companies with 577 brands have registered for use, as the Federal Ministry of Food told the German Press Agency. Among them are manufacturers and dealers of different sizes and industries.
The name of the labeling system developed in France means something like “nutrition score”. In addition to sugar, fat and salt, it also includes recommended elements such as fiber, protein or proportions of fruit and vegetables. Points are awarded for the quantities per 100 grams. The result is a single overall value, which is shown on a five-stage scale: from “A” on a dark green field for the most favorable balance to a yellow “C” and red “E” for the least favorable. The applicable field will be highlighted.
Didn’t start from scratch
A regulation has been in force in Germany since November 2020 as a framework for the legally secure use of the Nutri-Score. However, the logo did not start from scratch, individual providers used it beforehand. Companies wishing to use the Nutri-Score must register as brand owners with the French Health Agency and then comply with regulations. This is about supplementing the EU-wide mandatory nutritional value tables, which are usually small and can be found at the back of the pack. The Nutri-Score must be on the front.
According to the information, use in Germany has gradually increased. A year after the regulation came into force in November 2021, 244 local companies with 470 brands were registered. The number of participating companies is growing steadily, said a ministry spokeswoman. If you also include companies based outside of Germany that sell their products with the Nutri-Score logo on the German market or plan to do so, there are a total of 440 companies with 719 brands.
