A PRO deputy proposed zero withholdings on wheat to show solidarity with the world

Planting projections indicate a drop from 6.9 to 6.3 million hectares, so wheat “would drop from the 22 million tons of the last cycle to less than 20 million tons.” In that sense, “A quick and rational reaction” for Torello would be the total elimination of obstacles such as the current retentions, a determination that would allow reaching 30 million tons of production.

The deputy also affirms that in this way more than 20 million tons could be exported. If compared to the 21/22 cycle, the National Government allowed exporting only 14.5 million of tons.

“Faced with the global crisis due to the shortage of wheat, the president threatens to raise withholdings and thus deepen this situation,” he said on his Twitter account.

The legislator’s initiative also proposes to eliminate the balance volumes, and all forms of export quotas or quotas for the export of wheat and its derivatives. The deputy pointed out that the increase will be generated by the expansion of the area and increased use of technology. “This will mean the export of more than 21 million tons of wheat, increasing current exports by 50%,” said Torello.

The withholding debate

On Friday, Alberto Fernández raised in radio statements the possibility of implementing withholdings to decouple international prices from local ones, but with the support of Congress. However, his Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Julián Domínguez, left no room for doubt “in no way will retentions be increased or a bill sent.”

“Before presenting the GanAr Plan in Córdoba, I spoke with Alberto Fernández, Juan Manzur and Gabriela Cerruti. Since I took office, the President’s concern is the increase in food for Argentines. In no way will withholdings or send a bill,” shared Julian Dominguez on his official Twitter account.
