Gruner + Jahr and RTL Deutschland are merging to form a new national, cross-media media champion. The new company will be active in television, streaming, magazines, radio and digital media.

RTL Germany and Gruner + Jahr – the publisher in which the stern appears – are coming together to form a new national, cross-media media champion. The decision follows a review process lasting several months with the aim of deepening the successful collaboration between the country’s leading private TV, radio and streaming group and the publishing house with its strong brands. The new company will start operations at the beginning of next year.

Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Rabe says: “The responsible bodies, the Board of RTL Group, the Executive Board and the Supervisory Board of Bertelsmann, have come to the conclusion that RTL Germany and G + J can better exploit their growth potential together. By creating this national media champions, Bertelsmann’s strategic priorities will be implemented as before in France, the Netherlands and Belgium. Our media businesses in the German market will be strengthened in competition with global tech platforms. ” Rabe continues: “No other media company in this country can create such a cross-genre growth alliance. RTL Deutschland and G + J are a content powerhouse with the content expertise of 1,500 journalists, among others. The companies manage strong content and brands in one hand Cross-media together. This creates annual synergies of around 100 million euros – largely due to growth. “

Unique selling points compared to global competition

In February, RTL Deutschland and Gruner + Jahr announced the open-ended review of an even closer collaboration and explored various paths in the following months. The project teams were able to build on the successful collaboration in the group-internal alliances founded by Bertelsmann: the Ad Alliance, the Content Alliance and the Tech & Data Alliance. Even after the merger, RTL Deutschland and G + J will continue to benefit from the close exchange with other Bertelsmann companies, for example with Penguin Random House or BMG.

The new company has unique selling points compared to its global competitors: It is aimed at the public in Germany with a unique range of local content of all genres. It unites some of the strongest German media brands and is the creative and entrepreneurial home of many outstanding talents and media personalities.

The company has an excellent starting position and growth prospects in the D2C business. Ultimately, it will expand its leading position in advertising marketing through cross-media campaigns and further improve its strategic options as a platform for possible partnerships.

Cross-media expansion of the core brands

The first editorial concept ideas of the new joint venture include, for example, the cross-media expansion of the brands stern and GALA on the topics of society, politics, investigatives and people as well as a significant expansion of RTL’s digital journalistic offerings, stern and ntv. With “Stern Investigativ” a new TV format is being created. As a brand for high-quality documentation and knowledge formats, GEO will complement RTL Deutschland’s offerings on various channels and create a new, attractive program offering for the whole family. A first high-end documentary series on the greatest phenomena of our time, which is created in the interplay of RTL, RTL + and the GEO editorial team, is planned for 2022.

The G + J stores DDV, Territory and Applike as well as the stake in Spiegel will not become part of the new company. You will remain with Bertelsmann. Hamburg will also remain the headquarters of Gruner + Jahr.
