In this way, the program will aim to “increase the coverage and improve the quality of broadband internet access in those areas of less interest to wholesale operators in the private sector” through the expansion of the Federal Fiber Optic Network (Refefo) in charge of the Argentine Satellite Solutions Company (Arsat)in addition to “closing regional fiber optic rings, to guarantee network redundancy.”
The financing, which will total $1.5 billion, will come from the Universal Service Trust Fund, managed by Enacom.
Said Fund is made up of contributions equivalent to 1% of the total income of each telecommunications services licenseeand finances, in addition to this program, different initiatives that seek to enable quality access at a “reasonable price” of telecommunications services to all inhabitants.
Among the benefits indicated by the recitals of the resolution, it is highlighted that the improvement of connectivity, in the specific case of border crossings, is a “fundamental tool for foreign tourism” since these are areas where “the scope of data may be scarce.
Likewise, “Quality connectivity will make it possible to technify and achieve high standards of internal invulnerability” in the security systems of the steps, and improve the management of mandatory documentation of people crossing.
In June of last year, in a similar initiative, Arsat, the Chief of Staff, and the Ministry of the Interior signed a cooperation and collaboration framework agreement to connect 13 international crossings to Refefo with an estimated investment of $1,380 million.
Said beneficiary crossings were with Bolivia in La Quiaca-Villazón and Salvador Mazza-San José de Pocitos; with Brazil in Bernardo de Irigoyen-Barracão, Paso de los Libres-Uruguaiana and Puerto Iguazú-Foz do Iguaçu; with Chile in Paso de Jama-Susques, Uspallata-Santiago de Chile, Paso de las Carretas-Santiago de Chile and Ushuaia-Puerto Williams (submarine connection); with Paraguay in Clorinda-José Falcón and Posadas-Encarnación and with Uruguay in Gualeguaychú-Fray Bentos and Concordia-Salto.
