the gap between producers and consumers reached 5.4% in April

The cause of the greater gap is to be found mainly in a set of green leafy vegetables, which combined strong rises in consumer prices and deep falls in the prices paid to producers. It was the case of Eggplantthe Broccoli and the Cabbage, where consumer prices had an average increase of 17% but the producer was paid 32% less. They also contributed the Lemon and the Orange.

On average, the monthly increase of the IPOD, considering the seasonality of the products, responds to the fact that the prices paid to the producer fell 7.2% in the month, while at destination the retail stores had a rise of 3, 3% and hypermarkets a rise of 0.85%.

The products that saw their gaps increase the most, in order, were:

  • Eggplant (+97.1%)
  • Lemon (+74.1%)
  • Broccoli (+68.0%)
  • Orange (46.0%)
  • Cabbage (37.6%)

In total, 66.7% of the foods measured increased their gaps in the month. On the other hand, 33.3% improved them, with the main drops in Onion (-37.2%) and dad (-12.3%).

The products with the smallest gaps, meanwhile, were: eggs (1.83 times), chicken (2.06), chard (2.35 times), onion (2.58) and Strawberry (2.76).

In SME businesses, 70.8% of the surveyed products increased their prices, while in hypermarkets, 41.7%. However, for 63.0% of the products measured, the prices in the greengrocers were lower than the prices offered by the hypermarkets.

The data comes from Price Index at Origin and Destination (IPOD) who makes the Regional Economies sector of COMECON based on the prices of origin of the main production areas and amore than 700 prices of each product at destination, surveyed not only in greengrocers and markets by a team of 30 pollsters, but also through online price monitoring of the main hypermarkets in the country, during the second half of the month.
