Vehicle construction: BMW lays the foundation stone for a car factory in Hungary

The company wants to actively promote the transformation to e-mobility. In addition, the car manufacturer will soon be producing from a new location. It should start in 2025.

The car company BMW laid the foundation stone for its new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, on Wednesday. From 2025, BMW wants to start series production of its first model based on a purely electric platform there.

As the first car factory in the world, the plant will produce exclusively with renewable energy and thus completely CO2-free, said production director Milan Nedeljković in Debrecen.

The company is investing more than one billion euros in the site. Around 1,000 employees are expected to build up to 150,000 all-electric cars there each year. The future model, which will be manufactured in Debrecen, is based on an architecture developed for fully electric vehicles and establishes BMW’s “New Class”, which will then be introduced across the Group. It should give a boost to the sale of battery cars and make them as profitable as the combustion engines are today.

Development of further capacities in Europe

The new plant in Hungary plays a crucial role for BMW in the transformation to electromobility, said Nedeljković. It is also an important building block for the group’s goal of increasing production and sales to 3 million cars by 2030 – half of them pure electric vehicles. By building up additional capacities in Europe, BMW is improving its balance between America, China and Europe. Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Péter Szijjártó said his country offers investors political stability, an excellent workforce and the lowest taxes on labor in Europe.

The Debrecen plant sets standards in environmental protection and digitalization, said Nedeljkovic. “We will use neither oil nor natural gas, but only energy obtained from renewable sources”.
