the BCR said it reduced its 22/23 wheat area estimate by 2.4%, to 6.2 million hectares, due to the dry weather that prevents many producers from starting to plant wheat as a result of the La Niña weather phenomenon, which affects for the third time in a row to an agricultural campaign in Argentina.
“Currently, 80% of the Pampas region (the main agricultural region located in the center and east of the country) is in a dry to very dry situation,” the Stock Exchange said in its monthly crop report, adding that “this cycle starts with the worst edaphic (soil) moisture conditions”.
According to the entity, so far farmers have planted 17% of the estimated area for wheat, which represents a delay of 13 percentage points with respect to the implantation rate of last season, due to the effects of the lack of water.
The wheat planting window in much of the main agricultural region of Argentina extends until the beginning of July, so rains would be essential for many producers to complete their planting intentions. However, the forecasts are not the most encouraging.
“Short-term forecasts indicate the entry of another front of cold and dry air that will cause a new drop in temperatures and the development of frosts, removing the possibility of rains over the Pampas region”explained the BCR.
In turn, the Stock Exchange pointed out that in Argentina the harvest of soybeans for the 2021/22 cycle ended, whose final production was estimated at 42.2 million tons, above the 41.2 million that it had previously estimated, due to yields higher than expected.
Regarding corn, the BCR did not publish data in its June crop report. Producers currently continue to harvest the 2021/22 cereal and last month the BCR estimated cereal production at 49.2 million tons. Argentina is the world’s leading exporter of soybean oil and meal, and the second of corn.
