Environmental technology is the growth sector among start-ups. The global climate crisis is driving many founders to work on environmentally friendly solutions.
According to Startupdetector, 3,348 startups were founded in Germany last year – that’s around eleven percent more than in 2020, as a look at the Statista chart shows. With 747 start-ups, Berlin remains the leading start-up city. The following places are occupied by the states of Bavaria (613) and North Rhine-Westphalia (571). The top start-up industries are software, medicine and e-commerce, which together account for almost 35 percent of all new startups.

Strongest growth in the environmental technology segment
The environmental technology segment recorded particularly strong growth. The number of start-ups here rose by 144 percent year-on-year. The startupdetector report says: “The ubiquitous climate crisis and the associated social upheavals have obviously motivated a particularly large number of founders to set up a business in this area.”
