The UN strengthens the rights of workers. The new rules affect 187 countries.
The International Labor Organization (ILO) has declared a safe and healthy work environment a fundamental right of workers worldwide. Delegates adopted a resolution to that effect at the session of the International Labor Conference in Geneva on Friday.
According to the ILO, the fundamental decision means that all member states undertake to “respect and promote” safety and health at work.
Other basic principles of the ILO include freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining, the elimination of forced labour, the abolition of child labor and the prohibition of discrimination in employment and occupation.
The specialized agency of the United Nations currently has 187 member states worldwide, including Germany. Their tasks include setting labor standards and developing strategies and programs for good working conditions.
