The Argentine Ariel Guarco will seek re-election in the International Cooperative Alliance

“We want to continue contributing to the strengthening of the cooperative movement at a global level, putting the vast history and diversity of Argentine cooperatives at the service of a more supportive, more inclusive and peaceful world”Guarco stated regarding his candidacy.

A native of Coronel Pringles, where he chairs the local Electricity Cooperative, he is one of the top leaders in the sector at the national level, which is why he has been elected head of the Cooperative Confederation of the Argentine Republic and the Federation of Electricity and Services Cooperatives Public of the Province of Buenos Aires.

With a long history in cooperativism, he became the first Argentine to reach the presidency of ACI in 2017 after garnering majority support from 671 affirmative votes out of 691 possible. This made him the second youngest president and the second Latin American to hold the position in the organization that represents more than 300 entities from 110 countries and has more than 120 years of history.

Since then, the Veterinary Doctor by profession with a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Economics and a postgraduate degree in Social Economics, had under his task coordinate responses to the main demands of one of the most thriving sectors of the global economy.

“We are part of a great family where the wide diversity of world cooperativism coexists, which is nothing other than the diversity of the human race gathered to carry out a fair, supportive and inclusive economy, where no one is left behind,” said the Argentine leader in a press release.

Guarco argued that this “paradigm shift” demonstrates the strength of the global movement, which today has more than a billion members associated with three million cooperatives.

Likewise, its objectives for the next 4 years correspond to two central points: promote the Cooperative Identity as “the best path towards sustainable development”, and increase “the levels of incidence in international representation organizations”, said the official statement released .

In December, Guarco spoke with Ambit about the current situation in the sector, where he remarked that currently the cooperativism faces “The challenge of generating environments in each of the communities that are harmonious, that through higher levels of equity, inclusion and equality, dispel conflicts and gradually reduce this madness that we see of extreme nationalism, with exclusion, with migration.”

In addition, he analyzed the situation of the sector regarding the pandemic, the changes that the future demands and the opportunity presented to them as referents of a model that proposes a chain of production, distribution and consumption under sustainable, fair and clean logics. “More and more young people in the world find in cooperativism the way of living they want,” he said.

Among the nominations is Melina Morrison, nominated by the Business Council of Cooperatives and Mutuals, Australia, and Jean-Louis Bancel, nominated by Coop Fr, from France.
