The AFIP renews its commitment in the fight against child labor

The ambassadors of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Jorge Ramito Tapia Saiz, and of Paraguay, Juan Ramón Cano Montania, participated. Also present were representatives of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Unicef Argentina, officials from the Ministry of Labor, Social Development, consular and diplomatic representations of Peru and Chile, as well as members of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PROTEX), the Ombudsman for Children and Adolescents and the National Directorate of Migration.

At the opening of the meeting, Marcó del Pont highlighted “the importance of coordinated work and integration not only within the AFIP, but also with other official agencies, organizations and neighboring countries.” In this sense, the official mentioned that “since we arrived at the AFIP we are not only working on improving collection, but also on linking and associating phenomena such as informality in registration and labor relations, with a view to access to rights and protection, including children”.

For his part, Castagneto highlighted the work being done by the organization in coordination with different sectors and agencies in the fight against illegal work and child exploitation. “They become concrete facts in each operation that we carry out throughout the country,” said the head of the General Directorate of Social Security Resources.

The different aspects that were addressed in the meeting, in which representatives from all sectors exchanged ideas, were about the need for active and articulated policies to face the problem, taking into account that child labor refers to any work that is physically, mentally, socially or morally detrimental to the child, affects his schooling and prevents him from playing. Also throughout the exchange, the strong link between poverty and child labor was repeatedly mentioned, and that it is a territorial problem, not concentrated in certain regions.

The reason for the event was not only to make the problem visible, but also to join forces in the development of a comprehensive public policy aimed at social inclusion and the recognition of the rights of a social group that during the pandemic saw an increased situation of vulnerability.

The importance of uniting various national and international actors had the function of generating a synergy that highlights the importance of developing comprehensive strategies at the regional level aimed at reducing asymmetries, guaranteeing the full validity of human rights.

In 2020, the AFIP created a specialized area against Illegal Work, a functional unit at the head of which is not only the fight against child exploitation, but also migrant work in irregular conditions and all forms of child exploitation. From that area, a federal, comprehensive and coordinated work scheme is organized with the Regional Directorates of the DGI that allowed not only the detection of cases of child and labor exploitation, but also the rescue and integration of the victims and their families in state devices that allow their containment.
