More security for Lieferando couriers: The food delivery service wants to set a new industry standard and offer open-ended employment contracts.
The food delivery service Lieferando offers its couriers unlimited employment contracts.
On the one hand, this applies immediately to newly hired employees, as the company of the Dutch industry giant Just Eat Takeaway announced. On the other hand, the approximately 10,000 existing drivers of Takeaway Express GmbH are also offered unlimited contracts.
Although their temporary employment has usually been extended, the new contracts offer more security, emphasized the delivery service. The aim is to set a new industry standard, said Takeaway Express boss Alexander Linden. Works council chairman Semih Yalcin welcomed the move.
Lieferando has relied on the regular employment of couriers since the start of the delivery service in 2016. In the industry, they are often classified as independent entrepreneurs based on the so-called “gig economy” model. Politicians are repeatedly calling for better employment conditions for courier drivers.
Lieferando is the clear market leader in the business in Germany. But the competition is heating up right now. In May, the pioneer Delivery Hero announced that it would return to the German market. In addition, services such as Gorillas, Flink and Getir offer fast delivery of supermarket goods.
