Achim Schollenberger and Simone Stiefel’s penchant for unusual dwellings is obvious. Most of them live in a former water tower in Usingen in Hesse. As a weekend domicile, they have set up a home in a former transformer station in nearby Oberursel.
O-Ton Achim Schollenberger, client “Hello, welcome to the smallest free-standing house in Germany.”
On 14 square meters there are bedroom and living room, kitchen and bathroom. Electric underfloor heating ensures pleasant warmth, the soundproof windows keep the traffic noise outside. Several small details show how much thought the couple put into the design.
O-Ton Achim Schollenberger, client “Here we are on the first floor and have the sitting and lounging area and here our toilet with toilet, sink and shower, with towel radiator and ventilation.”
“Villa Stierstadt” is what the couple called their little house in the middle of the district of the same name, which has long since become a tourist attraction there. The exterior design is inspired by the Alte Oper in Frankfurt; the graffiti artist Markus Janista sprayed the building accordingly.
