Climate change: Habeck: Transition to “green steel” must be quick

The federal government wants to invest billions in switching to the production of so-called “green steel”. But the change still has to pick up speed, demands the Economics Minister.

Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck sees Germany under time and competitive pressure when switching to climate-friendly steel production.

“We have no time to waste,” said the Green politician on Thursday during a visit to the Arcelormittal steelworks in Bremen. The emissions of climate-damaging carbon dioxide (CO2) must be reduced quickly. In addition, other economic powers such as the USA, India and China are also working on concepts for so-called green steel, which is produced in a climate-neutral manner.

Arcelormittal has set itself the goal of reducing CO2 emissions in Europe by 30 percent by 2030 and producing carbon-neutral steel worldwide by 2050. To this end, two blast furnaces at the Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt sites in Brandenburg are to be replaced by more modern technology by 2026: the plants are to be operated initially with natural gas and later with climate-neutral hydrogen.

Habeck said federal funding for the billion-euro investment had been made available. The project can be started even if approval by the EU is still pending. He did not give numbers.
