World trade: India expects great success at WTO ministerial conference

After a tough tug-of-war, the WTO conference has already been extended by a day in order to get at least a few agreements. Meanwhile, India is optimistic and anticipates solid results.

After a long tug-of-war, the World Trade Organization (WTO) is beginning to agree on several agreements.

“India is convinced that this will be one of the most successful ministerial meetings in a long time,” Indian Trade and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said in Geneva on Thursday. Solid decisions have been made.

However, the official acceptance of the decisions by all 164 member countries was still missing in the late afternoon. Goyal declined to give details either. The closing session of the meeting, with the adoption of the agreements, which have been sealed until then, was not expected until after 7 p.m. India was one of the countries that has long rejected numerous draft texts.

The ministerial meeting discussed, among other things, a temporary suspension of patents on corona vaccines, an end to harmful fisheries subsidies, a declaration on food security, an extension of the agreement not to levy tariffs on digital trade and a work program for reforms within the organisation argued.
