Anyone who has to sit in the office suffers particularly from the high temperatures in the summer heat. Here are a few tips to make everyday work more bearable.
Cold drinks by the pool, putting your feet in a cold stream or running into the waves of the sea: Do you catch yourself dreaming at the thought of cooling off? Let’s make it short: If you have to sit in the office these days, you can feel sorry. At temperatures above 30 degrees, sweating is the order of the day. And suffering. But isn’t there anything you can do to make it at least bearable in the office?
Yes – of course. We have collected a few home remedies and tips that will at least cool down the working day a little.
1. Ventilate properly and lower the sun protection
Sufficient ventilation should be provided in the morning – then the windows close. And sun protection in front of the window is also practical to keep the heat out of the room. If you are sitting in an open-plan office, ask the colleague who is there first thing in the morning to throw open all the windows.
2. Air is not just air
If your office has a ventilation system, use it. The same applies here: window closed. The idea that drafts make the temperatures more bearable is not correct here. With the window open, you only bring the heat into the house.
3. Go to work earlier
If you have a working time account, you can simply come to the office earlier if the temperatures are still bearable. Some bosses are even so accommodating that they send employees home earlier and make up the hours later.
4. Choosing the right clothing in the heat
With such high temperatures, it is important to wear the right clothing. Linen or cotton fabrics are ideal. Be careful with polyester, in such fibers you usually sweat even more. Clothing should be a little looser.
5. Use the fan correctly
Yes, the air stirrer is a nice help. But: If the fan blows the cool air directly in your face, you will quickly catch a summer cold. The cold air can also cause headaches. Better: Align the fan with the upper body.
6. Cool the body
If the body is overheated, damp cloths can be a relief. Wrap these around ankles and wrists. If that makes you uncomfortable in the office, you can hold your hands under the cold water tap. A damp, cool cloth on the neck also works wonders.
7. Water for the feet
A particularly pleasant way to cool off: place a tub of water under your desk. Feet in – gorgeous. If this is not allowed, simply take cool packs as an alternative and put your feet on them. That also helps a lot.
8. Drink – but the right thing, please
You should drink a lot when it’s hot, yes. That is an old hat. Nevertheless, we forget that in the office. There should be at least two to three liters in it when it’s hot. Better than coffee is tea, which you can also drink cold. A little tip: You lose minerals through sweating. Salt the tea lightly and drink it cool. Very refreshing!
9. Don’t overdo it
The nights are too warm, during the day the heat is paralyzing: anyone who is currently feeling weak is not alone. Don’t overexert yourself. Take short breaks from work more often.
10. Don’t overeat
Eating is important even when it is hot. Eat light meals. A salad is ideal or fresh fruit. The richer the food, the more tired we get from the food.
Good news at the end: People are more productive when it is hot than when it is cold. This was discovered by the US researcher Alan Hedge from Cornell University. He had employees at an insurance company in Florida work in a room temperature of 20 degrees. The result: the error rate was 25 percent. Then he turned on the heater. At 25 degrees, the error rate was only 10 percent.
