Employees are missing, the customer rush is great. The British airport London Gatwick draws consequences from the recent chaos.
After the travel chaos at British airports around Pentecost, London’s Gatwick Airport is limiting its capacity. As the airport announced on Friday, a maximum of 825 take-offs and landings should take place in July. In August it should be 850.
The measure is intended to prevent short-term flight cancellations, the statement said. The background is that airlines and aircraft handling companies laid off many employees during the pandemic, who are now missing in view of the sharp rise in demand. Thousands of passengers were affected by the flight chaos around Pentecost.
The airport did not say how many flights that were already planned will be canceled due to the new regulation. However, the majority of the flights will take place.
Gatwick Managing Director Stewart Wingate said they had successfully recruited 400 new employees. However, a number of companies had to struggle with a lack of employees at the beginning of June. “By taking decisive action now, we aim to help the aircraft handlers – and also our airlines – to better coordinate their flight programs with the available resources.”
