The Germans seem to be losing their entrepreneurial spirit. Fewer and fewer dare to be self-employed. Some sectors are particularly affected.
Interest in company start-ups in Germany reached its lowest level in 20 years last year.
Especially in the catering and retail trade, fewer and fewer people dared to take the step into self-employment, according to a report by the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK), about which the editorial network Germany reported.
After the long lockdown phases as a result of the corona pandemic, the uncertainties among founders are great, said DIHK President Peter Adrian. “There is a risk of losing a lot of entrepreneurial spirit,” he warned. “Because it is above all the numerous shops, restaurants and the many small and medium-sized companies that make personal responsibility and entrepreneurship tangible on site.”
decrease of ten percent
The number of potential founders who found out about starting a business in personal discussions with the chambers of industry and commerce fell by ten percent to almost 160,000.
According to the start-up report, however, interest in part-time start-ups has increased, bucking the trend: four percent more people wanted to build up a second line of business in economically uncertain times. And the number of start-ups also increased among larger companies. “This gives hope that our country can rely on innovative and courageous entrepreneurial personalities, despite the current imponderables as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine,” said Adrian.
