Russia delivers 50 percent less gas to Austria

The Russian energy company Gazprom delivered about half less gas to Austria on Sunday than usual. “The current restrictions on gas supplies from Russia are at the same level as the previous day,” said the oil and gas group OMV on Sunday. The demand for gas is currently rather low, however, missing quantities could easily be replaced by purchases on the spot market.

“OMV is currently making purchases on the spot market in order to secure the supply for customers and storage – the supply is secured,” says the OMV announcement. The OMV gas storage facilities in Austria with a total capacity of 25,289 GWh are already 64 percent full. Austria has complied with Moscow’s request to pay for gas indirectly in rubles via a construct of bank accounts. Nevertheless, less gas is now supplied.

Because of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine and the subsequent sanctions imposed by Western countries against Russia, Russia has severely curtailed gas supplies to numerous European countries or stopped them altogether.
