Bicycle parking spaces, bicycle transport and rental bikes: railway associations and companies want to create more opportunities to use bicycles and local public transport together. And at the same time demand more speed.
Railway associations and companies are demanding more secure bicycle parking spaces at train stations and easier bicycle transport on trains.
In a joint paper, they advocate better ways of combining bicycles with buses and trains. As the industry initiative further announced on Monday, the Pro-Rail Alliance, the Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD), the Mofair association, the Pro Bahn passenger association and several subsidiaries of Deutsche Bahn are involved in the initiative.
«Only safe parking and connection enables the changeover
on bicycles and trains and relieves the cities of traffic jams, emissions and the risk of accidents,” says the document. The federal government has set itself the goal of having at least one million parking spaces for bicycles at bus and train stations by 2030. The federal government supports municipalities in the implementation via the railway subsidiary DB Station&Service. According to the paper, around 50,000 parking spaces are currently being created at around 500 train stations as part of this initiative.
“If 500,000 places are to be realized by 2025, the expansion must be significantly accelerated with the corresponding financial and human resources in the municipalities,
at country level and at DB Station&Service,” write the associations.
Rental bikes and bike transport
Equally important are more rental bike offers at transfer points. And taking bicycles on buses and trains must also become more attractive. This requires more capacity in the trains as well as simpler booking and tariff offers.
At a specialist conference entitled “Bahn.Rad.Parken” on Tuesday and Wednesday, the industry wants to continue to deal with the questions. Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing (FDP) is also expected.
