Energy supply: China’s oil imports from Russia increase significantly in May

In view of the Ukraine war, the EU countries had decided on far-reaching restrictions on oil imports from Russia. Moscow is now Beijing’s most important oil supplier.

China bought significantly more oil from Russia in May.

Oil imports from the neighboring country rose 55 percent year-on-year to around 8.4 million tons, according to data released by the Beijing Customs Administration on Monday. Russia’s imports also increased compared to April, when China imported 6.6 million tons. For the first time in more than a year and a half, Russia has overtaken Saudi Arabia as China’s most important oil supplier. Saudi Arabia shipped 7.8 million tons to China in May. Against the background of the war in Ukraine, the states of the European Union decided a few weeks ago to impose far-reaching restrictions on the import of oil from Russia.
