Electromobility: The federal government is arguing about purchase premiums for electric cars

Should the sale of e-cars still be subsidized by the state? No, says Finance Minister Lindner – and thus causes controversy in the traffic light.

There is a dispute in the federal government about the future of state purchase premiums for electric cars. After a push by Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) to abolish it, the Ministry of Economics said on Monday that the purchase promotion was relevant to the traffic turnaround.

This is a very important building block, said a spokesman for Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) on Monday in Berlin. He referred to the department’s proposals for further e-car funding from 2023 and an internal government vote on this that is still ongoing.

Lindner: Without a bonus, billions can be blocked

Lindner had told the “Welt am Sonntag”: “If it’s up to me, the purchase premiums for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, for example, will be cancelled. So far, the cars have been subsidized with up to 20,000 euros over their lifetime, even for top earners. This is too much. We can save billions that we can use more sensibly.” The finance minister is insisting that the federal government once again comply with the debt brake suspended in the corona pandemic in 2023. Lindner wants to prioritize projects for this. At the beginning of July, the cabinet wants to decide on the draft budget.

According to proposals from the Ministry of Economic Affairs in mid-April, subsidies for hybrids with a combined electric motor and combustion engine that are charged via a plug (plug-in) are to expire at the end of this year. For purely electric cars, the federal share of the purchase premium of currently up to 6,000 euros should therefore still be 4,000 euros in 2023, and in 2024 and 2025 it should still be 3,000 euros.
