Technology: Tüv: More than half of the tested elevators with defects

There are well over half a million elevators in Germany. Many have minor defects, but the Tüv always finds those whose continued operation endangers people.

The Technical Monitoring Service (Tüv) found defects in more than half of the approximately 650,000 lift systems checked in Germany last year. Around 4,450 of the problems found were “dangerous defects”, as the TÜV Association announced.

Around 2,600 of these systems had to be shut down. According to the association, the remaining defects could be remedied on the spot. Most of the elevators complained about had only “minor defects”, it said.

Hundreds of elevator accidents

“Defects in elevators such as wearing suspension ropes, defective controls or failed emergency call systems are a danger for users and must be remedied as quickly as possible,” said Joachim Bühler, Managing Director of the association. According to this, at least almost 650 accidents in which people were injured were registered last year.

The association also warned on Tuesday that elevator systems could also become the target of cyber attacks. “A potential gateway for cyber attacks is the building technology networked in the Internet of Things (IoT), which also includes elevator systems,” Bühler said. “Elevator controls and emergency call systems connected to the Internet in particular must be protected as far as possible from digital attacks.” There is a lack of binding specifications and legal regulations.
