The number of unemployed and training participants fell by 1,622 compared to the previous week, and there have been fewer than 300,000 job seekers for a long time. The Ministry of Labor announced on Tuesday that 298,483 people are registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS) as unemployed or in training.
228,038 people are unemployed in Germany and 70,445 people are in AMS training courses. Pre-registrations for short-time work currently amount to 28,083 people. “It is remarkable that the labor market is in such a robust condition and is able to withstand the economic upheaval caused by the Russian war in Ukraine to a large extent,” commented Labor Minister Kocher (ÖVP) on the current labor market data. For the week before last, the GDP indicator of the OECD for Austria shows economic growth of 4.7 percent compared to the same week last year.
The economic upswing after the corona crisis has been causing unemployment and short-time work figures to drop significantly for months, and the unemployment rate is at its lowest level in 14 years. However, the clear recovery on the labor market after the corona-related slump makes it difficult for many companies to find employees, especially in the catering, hotel, industrial and IT sectors. Last week Statistics Austria reported 202,700 vacancies for the first quarter, a record since the start of the time series in 2009.
