On July 4, the “concerted action” announced by the Federal Chancellor will take place with representatives of employers and employees. According to Scholz, Germany faces major challenges.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz has warned of a “permanent spiral of inflation” in Germany.
“That’s exactly what we need to focus on now,” said the SPD politician on Tuesday at Industry Day in Berlin, with a view to the announced “concerted action” with representatives of employers and employees on July 4th. Difficult problems can be solved better together than against each other.
«Social table of reason»
Scholz said that former Economics Minister Karl Schiller (SPD) described the “concerted action” as a “social table of reason”. This is exactly what the upcoming campaign is all about.
The term “concerted action” is known from the times of the first grand coalition. In view of the first economic crisis in the Federal Republic, in 1967 Schiller called together representatives from the government, the Bundesbank, business associations and trade unions.
Strong price increases for energy and food have driven the inflation rate in Germany to its highest level for almost 50 years. According to the Federal Statistical Office, consumer prices in May were 7.9 percent higher than in the same month last year.
Great challenges for Germany
Referring to climate protection, digitization and the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, Scholz said that Germany faced major challenges. The aim is for German industry to emerge stronger from the change and not have fewer, but more jobs.
The federal government has “rolled up its sleeves,” said Scholz. He recalled promises he had made a year ago at Industry Day as a candidate for chancellor. They were complied with. Scholz mentioned, for example, a determined expansion of renewable energies or the abolition of the EEG levy on the electricity bill. What Scholz did not mention: a year ago he had stated that his goal was to lower the price of industrial electricity.
