Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) received the representatives of all major food retail chains at a round table on Friday about a possible industry agreement on the subject of mandatory animal husbandry labeling for animal products.
“We have to start seeing animals as living beings and not as products,” said Rauch before the summit. The current system of animal husbandry “is not correct overall”. Consumers in retail should be informed transparently about the rearing and slaughter conditions of an animal and be able to take this into account when making their purchase decision. Rauch did not want to commit to the exact timetable, but “you could see the corresponding labels on the shelves in the course of the next year”.
The representatives of the retail chains Spar, Rewe, Hofer and Lidl all spoke out in favor of labeling at the reception in the Ministry of Health. In German supermarkets, husbandry conditions have been reported since 2019.
