There are large generational differences in Austria when it comes to attitudes towards work. While older people are characterized by an above-average willingness to compromise and commitment, young people focus more on private than on professional life. That’s according to a poll conducted by the Gallup Institute. 1000 people were interviewed for this.
74 percent of Austrians believe that compromises have to be made in order to get or keep a job. 70 percent say that it is necessary to work a lot in order to achieve prosperity: among the over 50 year olds, the proportion is significantly higher at 78 percent than among the under 30 year olds (63 percent).
For 70 percent, fulfilling work is more important than a high salary. 76 percent of those over 50 said so, and 63 percent of those under 30.
Respond to needs
71 percent believe that you should not work for an employer whose attitude you do not share. For 58 percent, private life is more important than work: the very young employees most frequently agreed with these statements (75 percent). 35 percent of Austrians would not take a job where there is no opportunity for flexible working (working from home, flexible working hours, etc.): At 67 percent, young people here show the least willingness to compromise.
“The search for workers must be tailored to the needs of different generations,” says Andrea Fronaschütz, head of the Gallup Institute.
