The City of Buenos Aires shows levels of poverty and indigence similar to the pre-pandemic, mainly in the south, despite the recovery in activity levels. Poverty reaches 21.6% of people and 15.6% of households in the City.
4.1% of households are below the indigence line in the City. In the southern zone, this percentage reaches 7.6%, a level similar to that of Greater Buenos Aires (which stands at 8%). Poverty is higher in households headed by women, reaching 19.0%, compared to 12.2% in households with a male head.
In the first quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate grew compared to the previous quarter, standing at 8.7%. Differences by zones are also observed here, in the case of the northern zone, unemployment fell to 4.7%, in the southern zone it reaches 12% and in the Central zone it is located at 8.8%.
Meanwhile, when the budget expenditures of the City Government allocated to social areas such as Social Development, Housing and Education are analyzed, a marked under-execution of the budget allocated during the first quarter of 2022 is seen.
“The City of Buenos Aires is a clear example that it is not enough to generate and produce wealth but to generate redistributive policies that aim at an equitable development of society. The persistent geographic inequality between the north and south of the city is a pending debt of the government of Horacio Rodríguez Larreta”he claimed Darius Romano, Coordinator of the Work and Production area.
