In Germany, more people are back in work than a year ago. The hours worked by everyone has also increased.
The job market is increasingly recovering from the corona shock. The number of people in employment and the volume of work increased in the second quarter of 2021.
According to the Federal Statistical Office, around 44.7 million people were employed in Germany between April and June. Compared to the previous quarter, this was a seasonally adjusted increase of 75,000 people (plus 0.2 percent). At the beginning of the year, the number had fallen, but it is still below the pre-crisis level of the fourth quarter of 2019, as the Wiesbaden authority announced on Tuesday.
According to preliminary calculations by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the overall economic volume of work – the hours worked by all employees and self-employed – rose sharply by 6.8 percent to 14.1 billion hours compared to the second quarter of 2020. One reason is the reduced use of short-time work, which has fallen from a maximum of six million people since the second half of March 2020 to a good two million. According to the information, each individual worked an average of 316.2 working hours in the second quarter, 6.8 percent more than at the height of the Corona crisis a year earlier.
