Study: Consumers want e-cars with a long range

Electric cars are on the rise. However, the majority of vehicles with combustion engines are still being sold. According to a survey, consumers in Europe are particularly demanding.

According to a new study, consumers in Germany and France expect a particularly long range from e-cars. This was the result of a survey in spring, to which 13,000 people in 18 countries responded, according to the auditing and consulting company EY.

When asked about an acceptable range for electric vehicles, women and men in France gave an average of 378 kilometers per charge, for Germany the figure was 350. In Italy, on the other hand, only 302 kilometers were required, in the USA 317.

According to manufacturers, electric cars currently have a range of around 120 kilometers (small cars) to 600 kilometers (SUVs and sedans), the study continued. Depending on driving style, weight of the car and temperature, other values could result.

In an international comparison, European customers were more inclined to buy cars they were familiar with, i.e. petrol and diesel vehicles, said the head of mobility division Western Europe at EY, Constantin Gall. But e-mobility is also on the rise in Europe. The reason for this is also stricter emission standards and climate protection goals.

For the study, those respondents who actually want to buy a car were asked in detail about their purchase intentions. The proportion of potential car buyers who want to buy an e-car is now 35 percent in Germany. The global average is lower – at 30 percent.
