For months, prices, especially for energy and food, have only known one direction: upwards. More and more people are noticing this in everyday life – and an improvement seems a long way off.
More and more people in Germany are feeling the effects of the persistently high prices in everyday life.
In the ZDF “Politbarometer” published on Friday, 40 percent of those surveyed said that inflation was causing them major problems personally, at the beginning of April this was only the case with 34 percent of the participants.
83 percent of those surveyed also believe that the sharp rise in prices is endangering prosperity in Germany, after 73 percent at the beginning of April. Three out of five (61 percent) consider the political relief measures to be insufficient, and only 6 percent go too far.
Increasing financial worries
One of the main drivers of inflation is the high and rising energy prices, partly due to the war in Ukraine and the associated uncertainties in gas and oil supplies. According to the Federal Statistical Office, energy was 38 percent more expensive in June than in the same month last year. According to a Yougov survey, 71 percent of people in Germany are financially concerned about this.
Food has also become significantly more expensive recently, with prices rising by 12.7 percent in June, according to the Federal Statistical Office. This development is likely to continue in the coming weeks and months: As the economic research institute Ifo announced on Friday based on a survey, almost every retailer of food and luxury goods wants to increase their prices.
However, there are first signs that the inflation rate could gradually fall over the course of the year. “Because the price expectations in some sectors of the economy whose production is upstream of consumption have fallen for the second time in a row,” said Ifo economic expert Timo Wollmershäuser, naming industry, construction and wholesale, for example.
