Eating and drinking outside the home, traveling within Germany. For many people, June felt almost like a month before the pandemic – but only almost, as figures from the hospitality industry show.
The hospitality industry in Germany benefited from the gradual easing of the corona restrictions with a jump in sales in June. However, the industry is still a long way from pre-crisis levels, as data from the Federal Statistical Office shows.
According to this, restaurateurs and hoteliers posted significantly more sales in June than in May of the current year, both price-adjusted (plus 61.7 percent) and nominally (plus 63.9 percent). Adjusted for prices, however, sales were still 40.7 percent below the pre-crisis level of February 2020 and 0.8 percent below the level of June 2020.
In the first half of the year, the industry lags well overall: From January to June 2021 inclusive, sales were 38.0 percent below the level of the first six months of 2020 in real terms, the nominal decrease is 35.6 percent. This is mainly due to the fact that at the beginning of 2020, before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, hotels and restaurants were still open without restriction for almost three months.
