From the beginning of his administration, Martín Guzmán focused mainly on the weight of Argentina’s foreign debt and renegotiated with bondholders and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), with whom the country had an open negotiation for US$44 billion. contracted by the administration of Mauricio Macri. And in fact, he was scheduled to travel this Monday to negotiate the debt with the Paris Club.

Having overcome that first stage, which was first crossed by the Covid-19 pandemic and later added to the imbalances in the world economy with the economic reactivation policies and the war in Ukraine, Martín Guzmán focused his sights on the local debt. and managing inflation and financial variables. But in the meantime, he had to face criticism from Kirchnerism for cutting public spending. In fact, his resignation occurred while Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, the strongest voice within the tripartite space of the Frente de Todos, was speaking at an event.

Among the chapters of that intern, one of the most conflicting points was energy policy. In this area, the officials who respond to Cristina Kirchner stomp hard. The application of a policy of segmented rates and reduction of subsidies was a reason for crosses in the governing alliance.

Until now, Martín Guzmán had endured, with the support of Alberto Fernández, the onslaught of several Kirchner leaders who had been asking for his head for months. Finally today they got it.

It should be remembered that one of the first crosses that were publicly exposed was the agreement with the IMF, the main cucarda that Martín Guzmán hung in his administration. The signing of that pact did not have the support of Kirchnerism and in fact produced the resignation of Máximo Kirchner as head of the ruling bloc. For the sector that responds to the vice president, the agreement implies a deterioration for the most relegated economic sectors because it implies a cut in public spending.

The presence of Kirchnerist leaders in the area of Energy deprived Guzmán of being able to advance according to his plan in a disarming the rate subsidy scheme at the speed it intended. Guzmán even tried to fire Frederic BasualdoUndersecretary of Electric Power, but was supported by Cristina Kirchner.

In recent weeks, the outgoing minister had managed to gain power within the areas of his responsibility. For example, he appointed the Secretary of Commerce, Guillermo Hang, who replaced Roberto Feletti.

The letter of resignation of Martín Guzmán

“In the economy, there are always dilemmas,” said the outgoing Martín Guzmán in his 7-page resignation letter that he posted on the social network Twitter, even before it circulated through official communication channels.

And he added: “From the experience I have lived, I consider that it will be essential that I work on a political agreement within the ruling coalition so that whoever replaces me, who will have this high responsibility ahead of him, has centralized management of the political instruments necessary to consolidate the progress described and face the challenges ahead. This will help whoever succeeds me to carry out the steps leading to economic and social progress with the political support that is necessary for them to be effective”.

In his letter to the President, the now former official thanked him for his trust and considered “a true honor to accompany him in the task of putting our country on its feet.”

“Together we have taken steps so that the economy of our country recovers and grows. The hour needs that whoever you have take the reins of the Ministry that until today I had the honor of leading”, he affirmed, after carrying out an extensive analysis of his management at the front of wallet.
