Elstar, Braeburn, Gala – apples are the most important tree fruits in Germany. In this, however, there is a minus in the harvest.
The apple harvest in Germany this year is a little smaller than last year. The producers expect a quantity of around 937,000 tons, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. That would be 87,000 tons or 8.5 percent less than last year and also 2 percent less than the ten-year average.
Apples are the most important tree fruit in Germany and are grown on an area of almost 34,000 hectares. The most important areas are on Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg, in the Altes Land in Lower Saxony and in Saxony. Around 72 percent of all apples in Germany are harvested here.
Baden-Württemberg is also the most important area for plums and plums. At 34,000 tons, the total German harvest this year will be significantly smaller than in 2020, with a minus of 27 percent, which was exactly in line with the long-term average. The reasons are unfavorable weather conditions and the fact that alternating plum trees only bring a large harvest every two years.
