Aviation: 200 mechanics in Denmark join SAS strike

The pilots at SAS get support during the strike. 200 aircraft mechanics want to lay down the maintenance work.

200 aircraft mechanics in Denmark want to join the pilots’ strike at the ailing airline SAS on Thursday. Mechanics in the Dansk Metal union announced that they would not service SAS planes during the strike.

SAS told Danish television on Wednesday that the company would try to have the aircraft serviced in other countries. “But it is clear that this affects us in relation to the planes that are currently on the ground and require regular maintenance,” said a Danish SAS spokeswoman for broadcaster DR. “When the pilots come back, we cannot go with them immediately to fly.”

The pilots’ strike paralyzed 34 of 100 SAS departures in Copenhagen on Wednesday. According to the SAS, a total of 30,000 passengers a day are affected by the walkout after failed collective bargaining.
