The ZDH President speaks of a two-tier society in education. That should change quickly, not least to counteract the shortage of skilled workers.
Due to the steadily increasing shortage of skilled workers, the skilled trades are demanding equal treatment of professional and academic education in Germany.
According to the ideas of the Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH), this should not have a symbolic character, but mean financial equality of vocational training with universities. “We have a two-tier society in Germany in education,” criticized ZDH President Hans Peter Wollseifer on Wednesday in Munich at the opening of the International Crafts Fair in Munich. Wollseifer advocated an “equivalence law”.
Wollseifer calls for better equipment at vocational schools
Specifically, Wollseifer named higher state investments in the training centers for the trades and better equipment at the vocational schools. “In some parts of our country, the vocational schools are in a pitiful state,” said Wollseifer. “We have an unlikely need for investment.” Universities are almost 100 percent financed by the state, but training in the trades is largely borne by industry.
ZDH estimate: 250,000 skilled workers are missing
According to ZDH estimates, there is now a shortage of 250,000 skilled workers in German skilled trades, and the trend is rising. “The training situation must worry us all,” admitted Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck and assured the trade of his support. As a priority, the Green politician called reducing the high number of school dropouts: “Ten percent of a year should not be lost.”
Immigration must be organized in a targeted manner and tolerated asylum seekers must be allowed to work after five years. “As a country, we have already invested in these people,” said Habeck. For very pragmatic reasons, it is necessary to allow them to work.
CSU boss Markus Söder demanded that attending the master school and studying should be free.
