Traffic: fuel prices fall – diesel again under two euros

Refuel before the border: In many holiday countries, fuel is even more expensive than in Germany. In this country, prices have eased slightly. The ADAC sees further scope downwards.

With the start of the holiday season, fuel prices have fallen. Diesel now costs less than two euros per liter again, according to the latest ADAC figures.

On a nationwide daily average, gas stations charged 1.843 euros for a liter of Super E10 on Tuesday. That’s 2.1 cents less than a week ago. Diesel became cheaper by 3.8 cents to 1.989 euros per liter.

At the beginning of the Ukraine war, fuel prices had climbed to record levels. Diesel is now around 30 cents cheaper than when it peaked in early March, and Super E10 is around 35 cents cheaper. However, fuel remains more expensive than before the war.

The development of the oil price, which has fallen recently, is likely to have contributed to the current slight easing. Normally he is considered the most important driver of price movements at the petrol stations. In the past few months, however, prices have decoupled to some extent.

Oil companies attributed the lower prices to the energy tax cut. The relief applicable from June to August is 35.2 cents per liter for petrol and 16.7 cents for diesel. The measure should apply until the end of August.

“Contrary to the opinion that has often been expressed, petrol station companies are passing on the energy tax reduction to consumers,” said the En2X industry association.

Because this was hardly noticeable at the pumps at the beginning of June, the Federal Ministry of Economics is working on ways to take tougher action against mineral oil companies. In addition to more powerful sector inquiries, competition watchdogs should also be able to skim off profits if companies abuse their market power. As a last resort, demergers should be possible.

The petroleum industry emphasized that the so-called tank discount comes at a time when petrol and diesel are scarce on the world market. From ADAC’s point of view, however, there is great potential for lowering prices at the pumps even further. For lower fuel bills, the motorists’ club recommends filling up in the evening and comparing prices with the help of apps.

Many people are likely to be going on vacation by car again these days. After North Rhine-Westphalia, Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, school holidays begin this Thursday in Berlin, Brandenburg and Hamburg. In a number of Mediterranean countries, Austria and Switzerland as well as in Scandinavia, the fuel prices are still over two euros according to the ADAC.
