Conflicts: Ecco soon no longer purveyor to the Danish court

Even after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, the Danish shoe manufacturer continues to do business in Russia. Ecco has come under public criticism for this. The royal family reacts.

After more than 30 years, the Danish shoe manufacturer Ecco loses its status as purveyor to the Danish royal family.

The title of royal purveyor expires on April 16, 2023, “and the royal family has announced that the title will not be extended,” the company announced on Wednesday. “Ecco’s management takes note of the royal family’s decision and has nothing to add.”

Neither the shoe manufacturer nor the Danish royal family comment on the reasons. Ecco has been publicly criticized in recent months for continuing its business in Russia even after the country invaded Ukraine. The company justified this with the responsibility for its employees. 1,800 people work in the 200 Ecco stores in Russia. Several Danish shoe retailers have stopped working with Ecco in recent months.

The title of purveyor to the royal court is awarded for five years. At the end of the period, an assessment is made as to whether the conditions for the award are still met. For example, a basic requirement is that the court continues to buy the company’s products or services.
