Cars: Tesla shows Model Y in Germany

Tesla boss Elon Musk would have loved to start production of the new compact SUV in Grünheide this summer. The company still has to wait for that, the Model Y is initially from China.

Tesla showed its new compact SUV for the first time in Germany shortly before the start of deliveries. The vehicle that was presented in Berlin on Thursday evening came from Shanghai.

Until production starts at the Tesla plant in Grünheide near Berlin, the German and European markets are to be supplied with Model Y cars from China.

Tesla originally wanted to start production of the Model Y in Grünheide in Berlin in July, but the completion of the first European plant is taking longer after delays in the approval process. The start of deliveries of the Model Y in Europe was announced for the third quarter, and the first cars should now go to buyers in August. The start of production in Grünheide is currently targeted by the end of the year.

The mini-SUV is a slightly larger version of Tesla’s first mass-market car, Model 3. In the second quarter, the company delivered a good 199,000 Model 3 and Y vehicles, which are the basis for Tesla’s advance into the mass market. Germany is one of the markets in which the SUV category is particularly popular – and Tesla wants to benefit from it with the Model Y.
