Fuel prices in Germany fall – increase in Austria

German premium E10 petrol has become cheaper for the fifth week in a row, according to ADAC figures on Wednesday. At Diesel it is the third week.

In Austria, the median price for diesel determined by e-Control on Tuesday was EUR 2.089, after EUR 2.067 a week earlier. With petrol, it was an increase from 2.079 to 2.095 euros. For comparison: E10 petrol cost 1.826 euros on a daily average across Germany on Tuesday. That was 1.7 cents less than a week earlier. For diesel, it was 1.963 euros – a decrease of 2.6 cents.

One of the drivers of the drop in prices in Germany is likely to be the price of oil, which has been trending downwards for several weeks. However, the weakness of the euro against the dollar is slowing down this effect. The decoupling from domestic crude oil and fuel prices should have increased again, said Martin Grasslober, head of transport at the ÖAMTC, when asked by APA. He was referring to an investigation by the Federal Competition Authority (BWB) last week that found such a decoupling.

The platform for renewable fuels is also calling for the introduction of E10 in Austria because of the high fuel prices. The proportion of ethanol in petrol should therefore be increased from the current five to ten percent (as in Germany), which is provided for in the ÖVP-Green government program. The biofuel admixture for diesel is also to be increased to ten percent, according to a broadcast by the Renewable Fuels Platform.
