The European Commission announced on Thursday in Fundão an agreement with Portugal to allocate funds for cohesion policy and maritime affairs, fisheries and aquaculture worth 23 billion euros to attract investment in the country.

The announcement will be made by Portugal’s Elisa Ferreira, European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reform, who will then travel to Fundão to announce the approval of this partnership agreement for the Cohesion Policy Funds and the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund. said this Wednesday the leader of the community in a statement.

Elisa Ferreira, quoted in the memo, indicates that she is “delighted to conclude a partnership agreement with Portugal”, given that “this will open up new opportunities for investments in cohesion policies aimed at developing a stronger, more diversified and more competitive economy while improving the territorial, social and economic unity” of the country.

According to information released by the executive at the time, last June the government presented the final version of the Partnership Agreement with Portugal until 2030 to the European Commission after months of dialogue and formal negotiations.

We are talking about Portugal’s access to 23 billion euros from the next Community support program, which takes into account the funds of the European Regional Development Fund (11.5 billion euros), the European Social Fund (7.8 billion euros), the Cohesion Fund (3.1 billion euros ). billion), the Just Transition Fund (€224 million) and the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (€393 million), the government said in a statement.

The agreement, which was approved by the Council of Ministers last March after a period of public consultation and then formally presented to Brussels, aims to “stimulate the structural transformation of the country, a transformation that should be based on skills, capacity building, innovation.” as well as in digital transformation, climate change and sustainability, taking into account aspects such as inclusiveness, equality and territorial cohesion,” said the Executive Director led by António Costa.

The idea is that the money can be used until 2029, adding to the 16,644 million euros of the 2026 Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Prime Minister António Costa, Presidency Minister Mariana Vieira da Silva, Territorial Unity Minister Ana Abrunhosa and Fundan Mayor Paulo Fernandes will also attend Thursday’s ceremony.
