Joao Paulo, a 22-year-old man, has seen his image shared thousands of times on social media over the past 24 hours. He lives in the village of Boavista, in Leiria, and did not give up when the flames reached his house. He has spent the last few hours saving people and animals, a moment captured by Paulo Cugna of the Lusa news agency. The photo quickly went viral.
A sheep on the back of a 22-year-old guy with a bare trunk, and on the horizon a scenario of hell: a flame that threatens homes, people and animals. It’s an image that’s invading social media all over the world, but Joao isn’t worried about the situation.
Radio ObserverJoao Paulo says he doesn’t worry about photography because it doesn’t bring back good memories for him. “Photos can be published in any country, I don’t care,” he says.
Early in the morning, the young man tried to save the animals that were in the field next to the flame. “We managed to save all the animals,” he says. In total, about 20 sheep were saved from neighbors and more than 40 goats from my grandfather.
Alone, unaided and afraid of losing everything he had, Joao Paulo decided to help firefighters fight the flames and get people out of their homes. “I helped get people out of the house. For me it was a difficult situation, because I was alone. They came to call me suddenly, and there was no one to help me save people. There were not enough firefighters to help,” he said.
The young man was not worried about his fame, and it was important for Joao Paulo to be able to help people he knew forever: “I came to help the firefighters because this is the place where I have been living for 22 years. I’m from here. that mine and someone else’s will go to the wind.
