Suitcase chaos at Lufthansa

The AUA mother Lufthansa is struggling with high levels of sick leave, especially among ground staff. As a result, many suitcases are left behind. According to “Bild am Sonntag” information, 5,000 suitcases belonging to Lufthansa passengers are left behind on the ground at Frankfurt Airport alone every day. In the meantime, suitcases would be brought to Munich by truck to be loaded onto planes there.

Bild am Sonntag (BamS) quotes a Lufthansa spokesman as saying: “The sickness rate among our ground staff has risen sharply. Due to corona infections, but also due to overloading, the sickness rate here reaches up to 30 percent. With the flying staff in the cockpit and cabin, the rate is significantly lower in the single digits.”

Unowned suitcases are now being transported to Munich by truck from various German airports. According to the Bavarian Ministry of Transport, around 5,000 suitcases from various airlines are currently stored at Munich Airport, which still have to be delivered to their owners. Bavaria’s Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) confirmed the “BamS”: “Bavaria relieves other airports.” The airport provides the storage space for this, and the respective airline has to take care of the delivery.
