Pico man charged with animal cruelty

A 35-year-old man has been accused of cruelty to companion animals in Lajes do Pico in the Azores during an inspection action in which “three dogs” were rescued, GNR reported this Monday.

According to the Territorial Command of the Azores GNR, the inspection took place on Thursday in cooperation with the city council of Lajes do Pico and the Veterinary Service of the Agricultural Development Service of this island.

At the time, “three abused dogs were found on the ground at the home,” the GNR said in a statement.

According to the GNR, “the animals were not fed or hydrated properly” and they were not provided with a shelter “with minimum hygiene conditions”, which could pose a “risk to public health”.

The dogs also “were not identified electronically (with a chip), did not pass the mandatory rabies vaccination” and “were not registered with the parish council,” according to GNR.

The dogs were sent to the Official Animal Collection Center of the Municipality of Lajes do Pico, “where they will be fed, hydrated, de-wormed, vaccinated and subjected to a period of quarantine.”

A 35-year-old man, owner and owner of the dogs, was prosecuted and the facts were referred to the Judicial Court of São Roque do Pico, also mentions the Territorial Command of the Azores GNR.

The National Republican Guard also encourages the reporting of possible cases of child abuse or abandonment through SOS Ambiente e Território (808 200 520).
