Electric car pioneer Tesla is pushing into the German electricity market. A first regional tariff is already available, according to a report there could be Tesla electricity nationwide by 2022 at the latest.
Tesla boss Elon Musk has big plans in Germany. Word has got around that he is currently building Europe’s first Tesla factory in Brandenburg. In the future, however, Tesla not only wants to supply electrically powered cars, but also to supply electricity for German consumers.
The first green electricity tariff for customers in southern Germany has already started. The Handelsblatt reports that Tesla electricity will be offered nationwide by the beginning of 2022 at the latest. Tesla is still holding back with details. But: “The Germany-wide introduction is planned,” the Handelsblatt quotes the electric car manufacturer.
Since spring, the first customers in Baden-Württemberg and now also in Bavaria have been able to obtain electricity from Tesla. So far, the offer has been aimed exclusively at customers who have installed a solar system on the roof and a power wall. The Powerwall is Tesla’s own battery storage device for the home, the box can be installed on the house at prices from 9600 euros.
Tesla is already active in the energy market in the USA, Australia and England. In this country, the offer is to be rolled out through the partner Octopus Energy. The British electricity and gas provider Octopus Energy already offers its own green electricity tariffs in Germany. With the “Kraken” platform, Octopus has its own technology platform for intelligent energy management that is licensed to partners. In the UK, Eon works with Octopus. Although the company is only four years old, it already has two million customers. “We are already working with Tesla on further ideas to generate even more benefits for you from your Powerwall,” announced Octopus Energy on the homepage.

Virtual power plants for decentralized power supply
The electricity industry is not amused by the new competition from Tesla. According to the Handelsblatt, industry representatives are particularly concerned about a product called “Autobidder”, a kind of virtual power plant. The platform makes it possible to network the power walls of Tesla customers and even the batteries of Tesla cars and to store excess electricity in them, which can later be profitably fed into the grid.
Such solutions for decentrally generated and stored energy are considered extremely important in the field of renewable energy and they are already available from other providers. Tesla is also not the only car maker penetrating the electricity market; Volkswagen is also pursuing ambitious plans.
But when Tesla enters a new market, of course everyone takes a special look. With its battery know-how, Tesla will now “attack and conquer the further trillion market for power generation and storage,” the Handelsblatt quotes analyst Jed Dorsheimer from the Canadian investment bank Canaccord Genuity.
Of the stern Tesla also asked about its plans for the German electricity market. An answer is still pending.
