Judge Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) ordered on Monday the removal of fake news from social media and internet platforms that linked former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to a gang and assassination.
According to the magistrate, “there is a clear perception that the fraudulent lies are intended to make voters believe that one of the candidates and his party are connected to organized crime.”
The decision mentions publications by supporters of the incumbent President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, who link the Workers’ Party (PT) with the criminal group Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), as well as materials linking the formation of the party with the death of the former president, the mayor of Santo Andre Celso Daniel, also from PT.
