GNR car caught fire in Vila Pouca de Aguiar

On Monday, a raging fire in Vila Poca de Aguiar set fire to a GNR heavy fire engine, with no casualties to the military, a Guarda source told Lusa.

In response to Lusa, GNR General Command reported that the accident had occurred in Vales.

“A heavy fire engine belonging to the Expanded Strike Company (CATE) of Aveiro, Emergency Protection and Assistance Unit (UEPS), had its funds available to start work in the theater of operations in Vales, in Vila Poca de Aguiar, Vila Real, when it was hit by fire.”

And he continues: “This was due to sudden changes in weather conditions, which, together with the strong intensity of the fire, forced the front of fire to shift towards the already positioned vehicle.”

Overwhelmed by the “speed of spread”, the military “failed to remove the vehicle (…), abandoning it to protect their physical integrity.”

The GNR information, which does not indicate the time of the incident or the number of servicemen in the car, however guarantees that “no injuries were recorded.”

Portugal entered this Monday at 00:00 on high alert after seven days of unforeseen circumstances due to fires that have devastated the country and recorded high temperatures.

The high alert situation will last until 11:59 pm Tuesday, the day the situation will be reassessed, Interior Minister José Luis Carneiro said on Sunday after a videoconference meeting with national defense ministries. Labour, Solidarity and Welfare, Health, Environment and Climate Change, and Agriculture and Food.

According to the Civil Protection Basic Law, the state of alarm is the least serious level, below the emergency, and the most serious level is the distress situation.
