Rice helped shape IMF communications on everything from the global financial crisis to Covid-19; and also to respond to changing membership needs from climate to inclusion, all within a rapidly evolving geopolitical and communications landscape. In particular, he steered the IMF’s communications into the digital age.
“Gerry has earned the admiration and respect of policymakers and influencers, as well as his peers, for his strategic thinking, openness and listening, and delivery of results,” Georgieva said of her colleague’s retirement.
“It has helped streamline the Fund’s communications and the Communications Department itself, reviewing all facets of our work in this area,” he noted.
Prior to joining the IMF, Rice had a long career at the World Bank where he rose through the ranks to hold a number of high-level positions, including speechwriter for several Bank presidents; as he was also advisor to the Managing Director, Director of Internal Communications and Director of Communications of the World Bank Group.
Rice has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Glasgow and was a Kennedy Fellow at Harvard, as well as the author of several books on American history as well as the Scottish economy.
