The rise in energy prices puts Germany’s production in check

The data shows that a quarter of them have already done so, and another quarter is in the process of doing so. Approximately half of these companies state that they are still planning the corresponding steps.

On the other hand, the energy-intensive economy is hit particularly hard: values here are consistently twice as high as the industry average.

A total of 32 percent of these energy-intensive companies are facing a reduction in production or a (partial) task of the business areas. Almost a quarter of them, ie a total of 8 percent of all energy-intensive companies, have already implemented the appropriate measures.

Another 10 percent of high energy users say they are in a corresponding decommissioning process, and an additional 14 percent have such steps in their planning.

Gas

The DIHK assessment also shows that many companies have yet to purchase significant amounts of gas for 2022 in the middle of the year.

Only half of the industrial companies have already covered their gas requirements through contracts. More than a third still have to buy more than 30 percent of their annual needs by 2022. This corresponds to a projected volume of up to 50 terawatt hours of gas.

“Due to the current situation in the energy markets, there is considerable cost and supply risk for companies in the coming months,” DIHK President Peter Adrian said.

“Many companies are now realizing that they cannot pass on the price increases they have experienced in direct or indirect international competition sufficiently to customers.”

According to the DIHK survey, almost two-thirds of industrial companies (63 percent) see high electricity and gas prices as a threat to competitiveness in Germany.
